“One of the most common mistakes leaders make in meetings is neglecting a proper ending,†said Steven Rogelberg, a professor of organizational science, psychology and management at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. “If you don’t properly close a meeting, people wonder what the heck was decided and can get very frustrated.â€
Most people keep talking until they are kicked out of their conference rooms or the top of the hour hits and people have to bounce over to their next meeting. Instead, people should be wrapping up meetings three to five minutes before the stated ending time to start the “closing process.â€
During this time, whoever is leading the meeting should succinctly recap what was said, what the next action items are and who will be directly responsible for completing the upcoming tasks. They should set specific deadlines and outline what follow-up is expected.
If the end of the allotted meeting time has arrived and there are still undiscussed agenda items, state what they are and when those things will be discussed next.

1 å¹´The core beauty of this article, is its forcing upon us all ( its readers) back to the fundamentals of why even bother meet, at all ?? . Whether its a face to face one or a virtual one, why the meeting, at all? , This article, solidly , so confronts us all!! If meeting is, as it should be, about a dynamic meeting and advancement of minds( plus hearts too, in a workmanlike productivity enhancing team camaradrie, kind of way) then surely a quick 1 to 2 minutes recap of the emergent imperative deliverables and action items, up to almost meeting closure, is totally non negotiable!!! . In other words, a meeting must climax in that, light bulb switch on , aha, to action moment, the collective gave each other in resolutions just passed . A meeting that misses that bulls eye, direct hit, is a project in futility. The meeting closure dynamic must be the climax of the call to action, not a limping, glad to finish, damp squib. Precise draft minutes of the meeting, while crucial to receive very early and in writing ( as an aid to execution ), for legal/ regulatory reasons, too, must still be no. 2, to a team leaving that meeting, with a ringing mental clarity on what to do next. It must be an action galvanisation viby clarion call ??.
