Most insightful articles about Industry 4.0

#weekendreading alert!

In the past couple of days, I've come across two of the best articles on Industry 4.0. I'm going to summarize the articles here, but I highly recommend for you to read both of these elegantly written 2-pagers.

First, Jeff Winter 's post: https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/jeffreyrwinter_the-birth-of-industry-40-activity-6972905466037157888-_pdE/

There, Jeff explains the origins of the Industry 4.0 movement and "The Why" behind labelling it 4.0. In summary:

  • Industry 1.0 circa late 18th century: utilize water and steam to replace human an animal muscle energy.
  • Industry 2.0 circa the turn of the 20th century: electrification and assembly lines.
  • Industry 3.0 circa late 20th century: use of computers, robotics and PLCs to replace manual production processes.
  • Industry 4.0 starting in 2010s: connecting systems, librating data silos and driving insights and decisions from data.

"Industry 4.0 is about cognition or the process of acquiring knowledge and understanding. These two are separated by the ability to properly capture and harness the power of data."

Secondly, Chris Stergiou talks about the macro shift in manufacturing since 2005 and how the stars are aligned for manufacturing automation and modernization of the Physical Plant and Equipment, i.e. rebuilding the modern plant. The main enabler of this once again being liberation of data from organizational silos and making data-driven decisions faster. https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/chris-stergiou-04a5811_text-of-2005-article-activity-6973988914982178816-VF9D/

velocity or speed of execution is the most important attribute to a responsive and in control manufacturing process or system, or any system for that matter

Happy reading and Happy Weekend!
