The importance of having the right mindset when making the transition from corporate accounting to entrepreneurship can’t be ignored.

I am pretty sure you have heard about the mindset shift many times before. And you may be thinking that you can handle it.

I fell into this trap when I was starting my accounting business. I didn’t appreciate how important the right mindset was.

Having worked as a corporate accountant for 20 years, I thought I had all the knowledge and experience under my belt. I thought that becoming an entrepreneur would be easy.

I couldn’t be more wrong.

When you are an employee, all you need to worry about is coming to work on time, doing your job as expected, and keeping your manager happy. Once you comply with these rules, you are sure to get your paycheck every month.

Running your own business is a totally different story. Being your own boss has incredible benefits, but it also comes with certain challenges.

1. Time management

You set the rules, you set your goals and you set your schedule. When you are not forced to work according to a fixed schedule, like 9-5, it's very tempting to procrastinate and look for excuses. You need to be very disciplined and motivated. What helps me overcome these challenges, is precise planning on a weekly/daily basis including a buffer for flexibility and time for wellbeing.

2. Assertiveness

Managing client expectations and learning to say NO was one of the most difficult aspects for me. When I worked as an employee, I was used to replying to every email and doing favours asked of me. The truth is that as an entrepreneur you can’t really afford to do it. You will need to make a choice and decline non-revenue-generating tasks.?

3. Dealing with negativity

There is no employee helpline or HR support center. You have to find a way to deal with ups and downs yourself. If you don’t look after your mental health properly, your business will fail. I personally find mindfulness and meditation really helpful. I also find that outdoor activity is great for my mental and physical health.

I would strongly advise you to work on your mindset as the first step toward starting your remote accounting business. After four years of running my own practice, I am still working on developing an entrepreneurial mindset.

It’s not so easy to stop thinking and behaving like an employee. So the best thing you can do is to start changing that today.

I’d love to support you on your transformation journey. So I created a FREE guide to help you make the transition from your 9-5 job to starting a remote practice and working from anywhere.
