The Most Important Superpower is Self-Regulation

The Most Important Superpower is Self-Regulation

It is a fact of Life that there will always be difficult stressful situations thrown our way.

When we are storing old traumatic stress in our body (organs, tissues, cells…), and we don’t ACTIVELY do the work to move it out in a safe, slow, and contained manner, we increase the risk of having any genetic predisposition for illness and disease (mental, emotional, physical) EXPRESS in our body.

In other words, what we don’t process and release at the root (nervous system) level, will ‘out.’

So,

  • How do we stay calm when a customer or our partner is challenging us?
  • How do we keep our cool at Thanksgiving when our nosy mom asks yet again why we are still single or a co-worker makes a passive aggressive comment about our work?
  • Or why don't we eat pizza for every meal.

--> The answer is self-regulation. It’s a vital skill.

Self-regulation is a continuously active process in which we control our own behavior through self-monitoring, self-evaluation, and self-reinforcement.

Self-regulation helps people to handle stress and conflict while strengthening your relationship with yourself and others, and overall well-being.

If we haven't been taught to self-regulate as a child, relearning how to self-regulate as an adult is like picking up a new language – it takes time, patience, and practice. But just because you didn’t get the tools in childhood doesn’t mean you can’t build them now. ?? The body is always ready to learn, and it’s never too late to start. ??

Self Regulation Consists of:

  1. Self-Monitoring: Become Self-aware of our own behavior, the influences on our behavior, and the consequences of our behavior;
  2. Judge our behavior: in relation to our own personal standards and more contextual standards like workplace or family settings - ask yourself why did I react/act this way? Evaluate triggers.
  3. React to our own behavior: what we think and how we feel about our behavior. Again ask yourself Why do I feel this way? Is that good for me?

--> In addition, it is important to do the following to effectively Self-Regulate:

  1. Start immediately!! - No excuses
  2. No longer identify as a victim.
  3. Believe that you deserve to heal.
  4. Create greater safety within yourself to the best of your ability.
  5. Integrate continuously.
  6. Don’t let little setbacks set you back - it's a journey.

Start. Learn. Heal. Repeat.

Even if only for 5 minutes a day.

Our health is all we have. When it fails we suffer.
