The Most Important Relationship You’ll Ever Have: The One with Yourself

As professionals, we often focus on external achievements—career growth, networking, leadership development—but one of the most underrated keys to success is self-love and personal resilience.

A Professional Perspective on Love and Leadership

Valentine’s Day is typically about romantic relationships, but over the years, I’ve learned that self-love is the foundation for confidence, leadership, and even career success.

Early in my career, as the Marketing Manager for the Memphis Grizzlies, I had the unique opportunity to create and lead “I Love You Big Time” in 2004—a major Valentine’s Day event that featured a mass wedding and vow renewal at halftime. Imagine an arena full of fans witnessing dozens of couples saying “I do” center court! It was a powerful example of how love—both personal and communal—can bring people together in unforgettable ways.

That experience taught me something important: Love isn’t just about personal relationships; it’s about connection, belonging, and creating meaningful moments. Those same principles apply in leadership, business, and community-building.

Turning Personal Experience into Purpose

Over the years, I’ve had Valentine’s Days that felt magical—like when I was proposed to on this day—and others that felt empty, even while in a relationship. After my divorce was final, I made a bold move—I treated myself to a pink Dooney & Bourke bag. Not because I needed luxury, but because I needed a reminder that I was worthy of love and celebration, even from myself.

That realization led me to create the Love Yourself Event, now heading into its 9th year. What started as a personal reflection on self-worth has grown into a fundraising event that empowers others to embrace self-love, confidence, and resilience—all of which are critical for success in both life and business.

Why Self-Love Matters in Leadership

  • Confidence in the Workplace – When you value yourself, you set higher standards, negotiate better, and make bolder moves.
  • Resilience in Challenges – Self-love helps you bounce back from setbacks, whether in career, business, or personal life.
  • Authentic Leadership – The best leaders lead from a place of self-awareness and self-respect, inspiring others to do the same. What have past Valentine’s Days—good or bad—taught you about self-love, leadership, or personal growth? Let’s open the conversation beyond romance and explore how self-worth impacts our careers and success.
