It was only four years ago when I helped start my social media agency out of the spare room of my Oakville townhouse with nothing but a laptop, an Ikea desk and time to invest. Spending a good portion of the first year calling busy business owners at times that were never convenient for them, I quickly found myself becoming a punching bag for frustrated business owners who had better things to do with their time. Honestly, if it wasn’t for that first year and deploying the patience with the ebbs and flows of a start-up business then I would not be where I am today. I guess that’s why they say 90% of startups don’t make it through the first year.
My advantage was timing. When I entered the market in early 2016, Social Media Marketing was relatively new to most business owners. I can remember pitching busy restaurants on my social media strategy and they would respond with “that’s cutting edge, tell me more!”. My ground and pound approach to selling, cold calling, cold walk-ins, tradeshow prospecting helped escalate my business with over one hundred clients within our first year.
Fast forward to 2019 and the market has become saturated with ‘social media experts’ thanks to online courses by Tai Lopez who are offering social media agency degrees for the limited time price of $19.97. When attempting to call a business to pitch them social media, I’m the 17th person that’s called them that day. “No no, don’t hang up, I’ve got something different to offer” never really worked because before I could finish my sentence, I could hear the dial tone from the frustrated business owner that had better things to do with their time than spending one minute with, yet another, “expert” trying to tell them that our social media strategies are going to blow up their business.
Times have changed and my social media agency has evolved with the times. Earlier this year, I merged my agency with a leading SEO and Web Design team to form Merged Media. Our in-house team of talented professionals includes web designers, copywriters, social media advertising experts, graphic designers, video editors and strategists. I’m happy to say that making this leap was the most important decision I have made for my business.
