The Most Exciting Thing About Writing Or Creating A World

I’ve always loved storytelling. Even when I was a kid I was freezing my toys, pretending they had been cryogenically frozen or mummifying them in small, wet strips of toilet paper, ready to rise again one day after being rediscovered.
No matter what it was, I saw every Leggo or construction bit as a tool to use for my imagination. In a way, El’Anthar is the same way. I started writing about it using my D&D campaigns as a template, but over the years, it grew into something more.
Before I knew it, the stories got longer; the world got bigger, and the oddities, became less odd. I began to question what existed within this universe I had created. Histories changed and things got more linear. Before I knew I was trying to tackle creating languages, cultures, timelines, and other races. I’d read about history and myths to see what I could use sensibly and still make it my own.
I think that’s the most exciting thing about writing or creating a world: You learn what’s there. It’s almost like it’s more real than you think and the world is telling its story. It reveals what lives on its vast plains or high snowcapped peaks. What cities and nations have taken root. What wars were fought for money, wealth, power.
Sometimes you meet people you don’t expect. I have what I call a ‘starter’ for a future book down the line. Out of nowhere, the antagonist shows up with the most outlandish personality. He’s an absolute jerk, but has a charisma that leaves you simply staring.
There’s something about a story that connects people. I mean, our history as a species is rife with them. They tell us about our past, sing about our present, and help us dream of the future. They are us, laid bare and exposed. Sometimes for better or worse, but always able to teach us something. Maybe something we needed to hear to help us in some way we never could have imagined.

I think with Ancient Blood, as I’ve worked through writing this series, I’ve learned never to underestimate where a story takes you or how it begins to shape itself. But for me, it reinforces one of my deepest desires to tell the best story I can. So as I grow as a writer, I hope my stories grow larger and more entertaining with each new tale.
I want it to be something my fans and I can talk about at cons, book signings, or even on my discord server with my subscribers. I wanna be inspired by these conversations and even give them a chance to be part of the world in a more dynamic way. To even give them a shout, saying ‘thank you’ and give them something to brag about.
