The most enjoyable parts of care work

Care is a face-paced industry to work in; fueled by laughs, personal interactions and making a difference. From the people you meet, to job satisfaction, to the diversity of the role - there are so many wonderful things about working in the care sector.?

We’ve drawn up a list of what we believe are the most rewarding things about working in care. There are so many to choose from - these examples are just the tip of the iceberg.?

The satisfaction of making a difference

People often find staying motivated at work difficult and inconsistent. From our recruitment experience, this tends to stem from being focused on a set project that the worker might not see the full impact of. Care work is an exception. You’ll find joy in making a difference to people’s lives and no matter the care you provide, you’ll bring a smile to their face as you walk through their door. There’s nothing better than helping someone overcome an issue they’ve been struggling with, finding solutions to problems and simply supporting someone with daily tasks. Knowing that you’re helping someone live their lives to the fullest gives a strong sense of satisfaction that is hard to match in other careers.?

The people and the relationships

As a carer or support worker, you’ll meet a whole bunch of amazing people with all kinds of stories to tell. You’ll take part in countless conversations and form relationships with those you care for, building trust and ensuring you and your service user feel valued.?

Adapting to new challenges

In the care sector, no two days will be the same. Challenges can arise in many forms; an individual may resist care, or maybe you’re having an off day. These challenges can be seen as opportunities and when managed correctly, can make you even more passionate about the work you do. Overcoming any challenges this way can bring a huge amount of satisfaction and help you develop problem solving skills and confidence.?

Flexibility in schedules

Choosing the right job for you might entail finding a position that fits around your already busy schedule, personal life and commitments. Care is a 24/7 requirement across all settings. There will be employers and establishments looking for carers to cover weekends, nights, long days or maybe just cover for lunch breaks in the afternoon. Care roles can be temporary, permanent, full time or part time so there’s often a flexible role available which suits your individual needs.?

The variety of work?

There’s often a lot of talk regarding the variety seen within care work; there are NHS care homes, private care homes, residentials, end of life care, home care, respite care.. The list goes on. This means there is always ample opportunity to find a role which best suits your career goals and personal requirements.?

Giving back to the community?

Working within the care sector is extremely rewarding as it allows you to give something back to your community. As a carer or support worker, you’re helping those in your area who need it most and you’ll be able to see the positive impact this has on the service users. The feeling of positively contributing towards society through your day job is a rare thing to accomplish.

Opportunities for professional development?

Professional development is extremely important within the care sector, and it’s available in many forms. Ongoing learning and development is essential for all carers to ensure you can provide the best support possible to your service user. A care career can develop into a specialisation, such as disability support, or a management role such as a care supervisor. If you’d like to stay in care but move away from the hands on side, you can look at progressing into the admin aspect of the role; creating schedules, handling payroll etc. Alternatively, being a carer can open doors for you in the healthcare sector too, such as nursing.?

More than just a job

It’s true that this line of work is so much more than a job; providing the care necessary to support someone’s physical and emotional wellbeing is truly rewarding. This, combined with the relationships you form with those you care for, make care one of the most fulfilling roles available.?

Ever-changing

Everyone that we work with has different emotional and physical needs. As a carer, the aim is always to provide the best person centered care possible, which requires patience and bespoke planning for each individual. This makes the days dynamic and the work ever changing, no two people or two days are the same.?
