The Most Depressing Day in Thetford is Coming: Here's How to Survive It

According to experts, the year's most depressing day is coming soon.

Here are some tips to help you banish the 'Blue Monday' blues.

When is Blue Monday 2025?

Blue Monday is the third Monday of every new year. This year it's on the 20th of January.

Is Blue Monday a real thing?

Sort of. Blue Monday is said to be the day of the year when many things that make us feel depressed all come together to create a perfect storm of feeling down.

It is based on an equation which combines several factors, including:

·????? The (usually gloomy) weather at this time of year.

·????? Debts hanging over us, exacerbated by Christmas spending.

·????? The fact that the feel-good mood of the festive season is now a distant memory.

Psychologist Cliff Arnall conceived the notion of Blue Monday in 2005 as part of a marketing campaign for a travel company.

As there is no hard scientific evidence to show that it actually affects us, many people dismiss it as a marketing gimmick.

But for those who do feel it, here's some good news.

Tips to help you survive Blue Monday

Take a holiday. Or at least book one. (After all, Blue Monday was created to sell holidays.)

There are many cheaper ways to help you survive Blue Monday, too.

Meet. Get together with friends. Go for lunch or even just a cup of tea or coffee and discuss how you are feeling. Talking through problems is a proven way of tackling them.

Exercise. Physical activity is another proven way of relieving depression. Play some sport or go for a walk. Meditation and yoga may also help. As exposure to sunlight can improve your mood, exercise outside in the fresh air.

Gift. Even something small like a bunch of flowers or a chocolate bar can make a difference. Gifting can make the giver feel good as well as the recipient.

Whatever you do, don't just sit back and get drawn into the depressing concept of Blue Monday.

Take action and have a great day instead.
