Who can tell which of today's events will prove most consequential in the future? Here presented is a list of events which proves to be one. This list covers the periods 1965 to 1969. Many things happen every single day. Only the future can tell what would emerge the most consequential



1965

  • Safrap (now ELF), Phillips and Esso granted oil prospecting license in Nigeria
  • Researcher unearths 10,000 years old skeletal remains fromIwo Eleru in Isaarun, close to Akure.
  • GaniFawehinmi called to Nigerian Bar
  • Act of Parliament empowers ICAN to take over the membership and activities of Association of Accountants of Nigeria, AAN
  • Mabel Segun, novelist, publishes My Father's Daughter
  • Baba Sala begins comedy
  • Wole Soyinka wields gun in radio service to announce correct election results live at NBC studios, Ibadan.
  • AdeyinkaOyekan becomes Oba of Lagos
  • Shell establishes Refinery in Port Harcourt
  • The Village Headmaster, TV soap created by SegunOlusola debuts



1966

  • Military strikes in January 15, with many first republic political leaders murdered: LadokeAkintola, Tafa Balewa, Ahmodu Bello, etc.
  • Major-General Aguyi-Ironsi becomes Head of State
  • OdumegwuOjukwu becomes military governor of the Eastern Region, appointed by Ironsi
  • Major TheophilusDanjuma leads a mutinous troop on July 29 and abducts General Aguiyi-Ironsi from the Western Region state house, Ibadan with his courageous host Colonel AdekunleFajuyi, military governor of Western Region. Both were later reported dead.
  • New Head of State after July coup, Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon creates 12 states to make good his commitment to a federal Nigeria
  • Aburi Accord holds in Ghana, Gowon and Ojukwu finds common ground
  • Isaac AdakaBoro declares the Niger Delta Republic and it was crushed in 12 days
  • JimohAliu departs from Ogunde to form own theatre party
  • Boxers; Anthony Andeh and Eddie Ndukwu both win gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica.
  • Sunny Ade sings The Way Forward
  • Gowon releases political prisoners, Awolowo and Enahoro
  • OlubunmiOkogi ordained a priest in the Priestly Order of Melchisedek on 4 December at the Holy Cross Catholic Cathedral, Lagos.
  • Victor Uwaifo becomes the first African to win a record Gold Disc



1967

  • Ojukwu announces secession of Eastern region as Biafra
  • Awolowo becomes Commissioner for Finance and Chairman of the Federal Executive Council in General Yakubu Gowon's military administration
  • Juju music begins to thrive due to vacuum highlife musicians create, who flee for the Civil War
  • Lagos State created as well as the West Central State
  • Dupe Solana, gospel singer releases Jesu Mbo
  • Benjamin Adekunle leads the fiery Third Marine Commando Division into war. begining their military campaigns in minority areas of Biafra, and latching on the successes recorded to launch attacks on the deep rebel territories.
  • Nigerians expelled from Cameroo


1968

  • ICAN starts conducting qualifying examinations for its students
  • Sunny Ade becomes the crown jewel in a galaxy of Juju superstars with the release of Challenge Cup which sold 500,000 copies. Others are AlanuL'Oluwa, Colonel Adeyinka Adebayo, and Omo Oba Sijuwade
  • Nigerians expelled from Ivory Coast
  • Owerri falls in September to the fire power of Adekunle's Third Marine Division. Before this time falls Uyo, Calabar, Port-Harcourt, Abagana, Oron, Eket, Burutu, Nsukka, and Aba.
  • Kainji Dam is commissioned, with an initial installed capacity of 760MW.
  • Nigeria with all the odds in her favour couldn't defeat Brazil despite leading 3-0 at half time at the Mexico Olympics.



1969

  • Adekunle hands over a now fatigued Third Marine Commando on May 16 to Colonel Olusegun Obasanjo, a former colleague at the Mons Officers Cadet School.
  • GaniFawehinmi defeats mighty FRA Williams in a lawsuit when he takes up the case of a factory worker whose wife was snatched by a top government worker. For daring to challenge the establishment, Gani was detained for months.
  • Government-owned DC-10 aircraft on a flight from London crash-lands in Lagos killing and all 87 passengers and crew on board.
  • EtsuNupe, Alhaji Usman Sarki falls out of favour with his people. North Western State government deposes him after failed efforts to appease.
  • Baba Sala starts performing comedy at Western Nigeria TV, changes group name to Alawada
  • Victor Uwaifo represents Nigeria at the Black Arts Festival in Algeria where he won a bronze medal.
