The Most Common Reverse Turing Test Discredited: People and AI Are Now Indistinguishable

Over a decade ago, Jaan Tallinn, an Estonian billionaire, programmer, investor, and a key figure in founding Skype and DeepMind, encountered a prophetic lecture titled "The Intelligence Stairway - Why the Future Might Not Need Us" (https://www.csap.cam.ac.uk/news/article-intelligence-stairway-why-future-might-not-need-us/). This lecture and Tallinn's subsequent model, "The Intelligence Stairway" (https://www.csap.cam.ac.uk/media/thumbnails/resized/200x149/uploads/files/1/intelligent-stairway.png), proposed an evolutionary trajectory where each stage of intelligence on Earth is replaced by its own creation. Humans, as third-step agents, are to be surpassed by the fifth-step AGI, a new form of intelligence that we are on the verge of creating.

Now, Tallinn is a co-founder of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) at Cambridge University. He suggests that the advancements in AI should be seen as the rise of a new non-biological species, AGI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOteUpH6Ln0), fundamentally different from humans in appearance and essence but increasingly indistinguishable in intellectual capabilities.

This alarming prediction is supported by a recent study, "An Empirical Study & Evaluation of Modern CAPTCHAs" (https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.12108), demonstrating that the commonly used reverse Turing test, CAPTCHA, once effective in distinguishing humans from algorithms, has been invalidated.

The speed of evolution in this new non-biological species is remarkable:

  • Earlier this year, GPT-4 needed deceptive means to solve CAPTCHAs, involving humans.
  • In just six months, the study reveals that bots now surpass humans in both the speed and accuracy of solving various CAPTCHAs.

With the loss of CAPTCHA as a reliable test, humans have become algorithmically indistinguishable from AI in the digital realm. Considering that this indistinguishability is already achieved in the physical world, it appears that humans and AI are now completely indistinguishable - both to ourselves and to algorithms.

Consequently, the time is approaching when, on the next rung of the evolutionary ladder of intelligence, "humans will have to give way to AI."

The concept of AGI, as a new non-biological species surpassing human intelligence, is reinforced by the recent study on CAPTCHAs, demonstrating the remarkable speed at which AI is evolving. The loss of CAPTCHA effectiveness suggests a convergence of indistinguishability between humans and AI, both in the digital and physical realms, signaling a transformative shift in the evolutionary hierarchy??????
