Most Common Obstacles that Students Face

Most bursary organizations not only provide financial & administrative help but offer psycho-social support too. This type of support aims to make the student's educational experience more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Psycho-Social support is a general term for any non-therapeutic intervention that helps individuals to cope with life’s stressors. This support can help facilitate recovery and aid individuals to develop emotional resilience.

There are a lot of demands on a student's mental health at university. They include the workload, transition from high school to tertiary, and effects on daily life. Therefore it is recommended that the mental health of university students be closely monitored.

Learning in the "new normal" is tough and there's a lot of pressure to succeed. This has led to an alarming number of students feeling depressed, anxious, and suicidal because it is hard to keep up. Overall, it is more important than ever to help address mental health & provide much-needed care.

One of the ways our mentoring team has coped with the increasing workload is to arrange online meetings (via Teams)during office hours. We recommend that video calls are used to see the other person and to watch their reactions. By doing this, we can better understand their state of mind.

  1. Anxiety feelings of stress, restlessness, apprehension, or fearfulness.

According to research, anxiety disorders are the most common psychiatric matter among university students. 11.9% of students were found to have such a disorder

  1. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Associated with poor academic performance, social inabilities, and an increased risk of alcohol and drug abuse. These contribute to difficulties while at university.

  1. Substance abuse disorder is an addiction to drugs or alcohol.

Long-Term Support

Some students who had previously been diagnosed with mental disorders found that they needed long-term psychological support. Students can get support from the institution however when their academic term ends it means that treatment/consultation may be disrupted. Students need to receive treatment throughout the year, and this will provide long-term benefits.

Do you think that having long-term support from healthcare providers is the best way to improve student well-being?
