Most challenging contexts in January 2024

Humanitarian Access Events

Crises in Ethiopia, Myanmar, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Palestine, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict currently present the highest score (5) in regards to access constraints. In these contexts, the?level of physical, security, and environmental constraints is particularly impacted by insecurity or hostilities affecting humanitarian assistance.

What crises have most deteriorated?

Out of 152 crises recorded in January, the ones classified with a category 5 (very high severity) that have shown an increasing trend in the past 3 months are: complex crisis in Venezuela, conflict in Gaza, conflict in Burkina Faso, complex crisis in Ethiopia, and, earthquake in Syria.


Supporting EWEA: emerging risks

January 2024 showed two new emerging risks with a high probability of occurrence:

  • The impact of war in Gaza and the Red Sea blockade on Egypt’s economy limits access to food and increases malnutrition levels among children.
  • DRC general elections trigger heightened levels of violence, leading to increasing protection threats, population displacement, and food insecurity.

In January, the highest recorded protection concerns were extrajudicial executions, deliberate or indiscriminate attacks on civilians, and other unlawful killings, most notably in Ukraine.?

This dataset puts together information on protection concerns in countries where a humanitarian crisis has been identified. It tracks 21 indicators at the country level.?

The Afghanistan WFP Food Prices dataset tracks the prices of food items in different areas countrywide. Since January 2023, there have been?significant price decreases for different items, with bread, cooking oil, and salt among the most affected.?


Ukraine: highest access constraints

Luhanska,?Donetska,?Khersonska,?Zaporizka, and Kharkivska were the oblasts that recorded?the highest number of access events in January.?Their access scores were taken from the Ukraine Subnational Access Scores dataset.


Yemen: Conflict incidents

In the most recent update of the Yemen Conflict dataset, the Internationally Recognised Government of Yemen (IRG), de-facto authority (DFA), and Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) were the actors in conflict across different districts, with Hajjah City,?Dhamar City,?Ma'rib, and?Al Jabin? recording the highest number of conflict incidents.
