Moscow signs Egyptian nuclear deal
Moscow has signed an inter-governmental agreement with Cairo to build Egypt’s first nuclear power plant (NPP), Russia’s Rosatom reported last week.
The deal envisages the construction of four 1,200-MW generating units at a new facility in El Dabaa on the Mediterranean coast.
It comes nine months after the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the project during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s state visit to Cairo.
The agreement’s scope includes the use of Russian technology in the plant’s construction and the development of further nuclear infrastructure in the country. It also provides for maintenance and repair of the facility’s reactors, fuel supply and handling of nuclear waste.
Rosatom CEO Sergei Kiryenko also signed a co-operation deal on the construction and operation of the plant with Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker.
The first of the reactors is anticipated to come on line in 2019, with the remaining three tentatively scheduled around 2025.
Kiriyenko said that a survey of the El Dabaa site would commence in December this year.
