MoSCoW Framework

MoSCoW Framework

MoSCoW prioritisation, also known as the MoSCoW method or MoSCoW analysis, is a popular prioritisation technique for managing requirements.

The acronym MoSCoW represents four categories of initiatives: must-have, should-have, could-have, won’t-have, or will not have right now.

When to use this framework

It’s used within Agile project management to determine which elements including tasks, requirements, products, and?user stories should be prioritized and which can be put on hold.

Who is this framework for?

Businesses want to manage and understand priorities once a deadline or goal has been set by key stakeholders and the team. They have to both agree on this before initiating the project.

Why do you need this framework?

To prioritise time-boxed projects and adapt to a broad range of uses across different departments (marketing, product, CS..)

How do you use this framework?

Before implementing the MoSCoW method, businesses must ensure the teams involved in the project and other stakeholders agree on the project objectives and the factors that will be used for prioritisation.

Next, teams should decide what percentage of resources will be assigned to each category. For example, 20% of the resources could be allocated to the could-have requirements, while 40% is given to must-haves and 30% is given to should-haves.

Once the requirements have been gathered and agreements have been reached between the business and stakeholders, then the teams can start assigning requirements to each of the following four categories:

Here are some examples per prioritisation:

  1. Must-Have - Security, backend encryption of your data for an app
  2. Should Have - Performance improvements, minor bug fixes, or new functionality
  3. Could Have - Font or change of colour
  4. Would Not Have - Initiatives here are not a priority in the specific time frame and may be part of future decisions

Use MoSCoW before your take on a new project. It’s easy to start and then you can add other frameworks such as?Kano Model?if you require a concrete measurement system.?

Definitely, a framework to prioritize projects! Initially one should use a simpler framework to manage projects and then make it robust by adding others such as KANO, RICE etc.....
