Over the last few days, I have had a lot of calls with uncertainty about the future and how the coronavirus will affect you financially especially paying your mortgage payments!
I have spent most of my morning speaking to lenders to understand their stance on the current situation and what are they are doing to help customers?
In a nutshell, they are all saying they will do their upmost best to look after their customers however, there was no specific guidance due to how quickly things are changing daily with the coronavirus. The next few weeks will be vital and waiting to see what Boris says next.
Is there the option for customers to go interest only? Is there an option for the customer to take payment holiday for a few months? These are options being asked and at the moment the answer is ‘there is no decision been made yet’
Do be careful if your lender does give you the payment holiday route as this may be great to save you some pennies for a few months. HOWEVER in my experience this can have a negative impact on your credit file actually showing as missed payments so do be careful and ensure you ask the lender the question and get it in writing to confirm this won’t be the case.
Lenders will probably look at this on a case by case basis.
For now, it is a case of keep safe, cut back where you can and whilst we are all nervous about what could happen banks are not committing to anything just yet. I think if you DO GET into financial difficulty then it’s a conversation to be had with your mortgage lender but they aren’t going to do anything on a ‘just in case basis’ sorry this sounds harsh, but I want to manage expectations!
This message certainly isn’t to add to your worry it’s to try and shed a little light as to where the mortgage lenders heads are at currently – like the coronavirus this could change daily!! Watch this space!
I am in the same boat as you, bought a new house end of last year and just set up my own business so I do feel your worry and I promise I will keep you updated with anything I hear/advice to help you.

4 年Kelly honesty is the best policy so good level headed advice. Most lenders have now publicly stated that payment holidays will NOT be recorded as arrears on a clients credit file so I believe the industry is reacting to this in a fast changing environment take care.
