Mortgage Professionals...Be Careful who & what you chase!

I talk to an average of 80-100+ mortgage professionals each and every month. Some of them I can help and successfully place at one of my client companies and some of them I can't. I sincerely try to help everyone I can to find a better opportunity where they can grow in their career, their income, their work/life balance and their sanity!
In most cases when I listen to someone I can make recommendations based on what they are looking for...better compensation, better pricing, better leadership with better decision making. After 25+ years in the mortgage business and having held roles from Loan Officer to EVP of Production, I've gained a LOT of experience. How do you gain experience? By making better decisions. How do you make better decisions? By having made bad ones!
I see lots of bad decisions being made right now by originators, branch managers and even production leaders. I'm seeing folks chasing ridiculous signing bonuses or guarantees right now. Why are lenders offering these exorbitant sign-on bonuses? Is it a sustainable recruiting and growth strategy? Some of these same companies are also doing massive layoffs.
My advice to any mortgage professional that is in the process or considering making a change would be to talk to current employees at that company. Pick some folks at random on Linkedin and reach out to them. Tell them you're considering joining "ABC Mortgage" and ask them what they like best and least about the company, the leadership, the culture, etc. Look up the person that's recruiting you...how long have they been there? How many jobs or changes have they made in the last 3 years? Consumer NMLS will tell you this information and it's free.
