Is Morocco Quietly Preparing for Royal Succession?
The issue of succession in government is extremely important in that clear rules of engagement are required to ensure stability and smooth transition to the next leadership. Whether it is the royalties of England, Spain or Morocco, or on how governments change leaders as we are witnessing in the United States with the retirement of Joe Biden, having rules is not an option but a necessity. And so it comes as no surprise that Morocco also has succession rules that the Allaouite dynasty ruling that kingdom since 1666 used to allow 23 rulers to a ascend to the throne, the latest one being Mohammed VI who became king in 1999.
These days, royal succession in Morocco is in the spotlight as King Mohammed VI faces health challenges. Key figures of this transition include Royal Advisor Fouad Ali El Himma and head of the police and domestic intelligence, Abdellatif Hammouchi, working to the pave the way for a smooth succession for Crown Prince Moulay Hassan.
