The Morning Routine That Helped Me Scale to 55 Therapists

Welcome, therapists and group practice owners! I’m Nicole McCance, a Psychologist turned Business Coach for therapists. Not too long ago, I grew my practice to 55 therapists, and I can confidently say that my morning routine played a huge role in making that happen.

Since you’re here, I’m guessing you’re looking for ways to start your mornings with more intention—so your routine actually supports your practice growth. Because let’s be real—therapist work-life balance is not a myth. It just requires a little strategy.

Prefer listening, I’ve got you! I recorded a podcast episode all about this topic. Click here to listen!

How Intentional Are Your Mornings?

If your mornings look like:

?? Rolling out of bed and diving straight into client sessions ?? Feeling rushed, exhausted, or mentally cluttered before the day even begins ?? Wishing you had more time for yourself but not sure where to start

…then you’re not alone. I used to be right there with you. But once I transformed my mornings, everything changed—my productivity, my ability to scale my practice, and how I felt about my days as both a twin mom and business owner.

So, let me ask you: What’s one small shift you could make to your morning routine that would set a better tone for your day?

If nothing comes to mind yet, don’t worry! By the end of this, you’ll have ideas to start creating a routine that truly supports you—both personally and professionally.

Why a Morning Routine Matters for Therapists

I say this all the time—my morning routine is part of my happiness formula. Before I got intentional, I felt overwhelmed with everything I had to juggle: clients, team, admin, marketing, and (somehow) also having a life.

But when I started my days with energy and clarity, I:

? Got more done in less time

? Felt more satisfied with my day-to-day life

? Had the mental space to scale my practice

? Stopped feeling like time was running me

If you’re growing your group practice, you’re already wearing all the hats—therapist, entrepreneur, admin, marketer, leader. That’s why a routine that supports your energy is key to your success.

My Morning Routine Step-by-Step

Grab your notes app or notebook—this is the part where you can steal what works for you and build a routine that fits your life!

1. Spiritual Grounding (6:00 AM)

First thing in the morning, I sneak downstairs (extra stealth mode so I don’t wake my twins) and spend 10 minutes calibrating my energy.

For me, this means Abraham Hicks guided meditations or high-vibration morning videos to set my mindset for the day. Want to try the exact ones I use? DM me "CEO" on Instagram @nicole.mccancemethod, and I’ll send them to you!

2. Hot Power Yoga (6:30 AM)

This is my secret weapon. Movement first thing in the morning grounds me, clears my mind, and keeps me focused all day.

Not into yoga? No problem! Find a high-energy workout that works for you—boxing, pilates, strength training, anything that gets you out of your head and into your body.

3. Nourishing My Body (7:30 AM)

Fun fact: I’ve been drinking the same smoothie for 15 years—and yes, I still love it.

Why? Because decision fatigue is real. Having a go-to breakfast means I free up mental energy for bigger things—like scaling my business and spending time with my family.

4. Supplements & Hydration (8:00 AM)

I keep my energy stable throughout the day with vitamins C, B, D, fish oil, and peppermint or ginger tea. It’s a small habit, but it makes a big difference in how I feel.

5. Setting the Mood in My Home Office (9:00 AM)

Before I jump into work, I reset the energy in my space—salt lamp, essential oils, Palo Santo, cozy vibes. It keeps me in flow state so I can show up fully for my clients and my team.

Your Evening Routine Matters, Too

Your afternoon and evening habits impact your mornings, so here’s how I set myself up for a great next day:

?? Winding Down (4:00 PM): Hot tub soak to signal the end of my workday

?? Early Bedtime (9:00 PM): Magnesium, calming tea, and 8 hours of sleep

How you close your day impacts how you start the next one.

How Will You Create an Intentional Morning Routine?

I believe that living intentionally starts with how you begin your day. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, just pick one thing to change or add to your routine.
