To Bend Like Bamboo is to bend with flexibility, boosting resilience. To be flexible is to be in our most malleable state. It is from this space we can see our life with fresh eyes, with a new perspective and energy.
How we see our reality is a perception, and whether we are perceiving stress or safety is connected to how our biochemistry behaves. Your reactions will give you a clue, if you respond to a situation that really gets under your skin and it almost feels uncontrollable, you might want to check in with yourself - are you living in autopilot?
Living in autopilot
When we are stressed, we tend to focus on what we don’t want, the negative and worst case scenario’s. We are designed to survive, so this is the safest way. In our modern way of living, we can get stuck living in a state of urgency and long-term high levels of stress feel normal. However, over time high levels of stress impact the systems of the body, our health, our thoughts and how we behave.
A great metaphor for living in autopilot is when we drive home, we get to our destination, but we cannot recall what streets we turned down, ever had this happen to you? Or when we are stressed and we are not being a great version of ourselves, we are possibly reacting to people and our external environment, we know we are behaving badly but we can’t seem to control ourselves. That is because the belief we have to protect ourselves becomes more dominant than the rational brain to be able to change our minds about what we currently believing in that moment.
When we vibrate at a lower frequency we stay in situations that aren’t right for us, for some they need alcohol and cigarettes to cope and thanks to cognitive dissonance, we keep replaying the same pain and drama by attracting in more of what we are believing is true.
To Bend Like Bamboo is to master flexibility
This is key, to be flexible in our mindset and energy state is to be in our most malleable state. To become more flexible, we want to focus on being calm and more present in the moment. It is from this state we can change our minds about what we are believing, our situation, we can see things from different angles and perspectives. This is a really important state to master to get through life’s ups and downs and inevitable change. It is also really important when we are wanting to heal our body, or losing weight or in our most fertile state. It is also key to optimise a connected and productive culture in the workplace, for managers to be optimised to be open to feedback and alter strategies accordingly and for leaders to lead with an elevated consciousness that radiates throughout the company’s vision.
Living in the honeymoon effect
When we are present and in the moment, we are more calm and in our most creative state. Catch yourself when you are focused on the past or addicted to the thoughts in your mind that cause you to over-analyse the future. I wear a wristband that I designed that not only reminds me that ‘I am enough’, it also reminds me to catch myself when I am not being present so I can bring myself back into the moment. I also catch myself in my reactions, and if I feel my energy declining and away from feeling elevated, I ask myself what belief is this story I am witnessing and thinking making true? Is this story accurate or is it an old one I am replaying? Can I change my mind about it? To read more on Bruce Lipton’s theory on the honeymoon effect click here.
To bend Like Bamboo is to change our minds about what we are believing and therefore what can be possible for us.
Mind
Wash and empty your mind using meditation that you love that works for you. Learning to empty your mind allows you to access your inner wisdom and guidance. When you find your own inner anchor you will not seek externally anymore, you will feel confident, inspired and alive. When you exercise your Qi and life force you are also processing your emotions and stress from the day. As you build your Qi every day, observe your personality and habits shift to be more grounded and positive. You are now allowing yourself to become a new version of yourself that can attract in all your desires, as you align with more of what you want in your life, rather than what you don’t want. Your inner dialogue, your words and how you speak to others will either generate more empowerment within you, or they will deplete you of it. I have an eBook with tips on meditation here.
Body
Stretches and exercises are great for fitness, digestion and of course, builds strength and endurance. Moving our body daily can elevate our energy, especially in the morning. I highly recommend a balance of restorative exercise like Tai Qi, yoga, pilates or walking, with strength training like functional training, boxing or weight training. When you are feeling great smash it out with strength and endurance training, on the days when you feel more stressed you might go for more restorative movement. This ensures that you do not further exacerbate more inflammation and stress that can affect your adrenal glands, hormones, mind and body. I have an eBook of stretches and exercises that focus on processing stress and emotions here.
Food
When we nourish our body on a cellular level we are maximising repair and an elevation in our energy. Every meal is an opportunity to give our mind and body the best environment to thrive and repair. Focus on deeply colourful whole foods that are ethically sourced and organic where possible. Also ramp up fibre, good fats and this will help you to tame any sugar cravings and the desire to chooses processed foods. Focus on what to up and you will inevitably eliminate more foods that are not right for you. Enjoy healthy recipe’s from my eBook Happy Food.
