#MoreThan

I wanted to start a new #hashtag about our identity. I found out I wasn't the first! MoreThan: A Healing Movement started using this hashtag for a similar and great purpose. I reached out to them and decided I want to further it!

We tend to identify ourselves by what we do. We try to find our worth in our work. This is why when we lose our jobs or don't get the promotion we want, it hurts us to our core. It is part of the reason that suicide rates skyrocketed in the Great Depression to 22.1%

Because of this, I want to start a new conversation. I want to talk about how we are #morethan our work. I will start this conversation with my own story.

People ask all the time "what do you do". It's such an introductory question we ask it to everyone we meet right away. I used to say a developer or now a Solutions Architect. I answered the question, I gave my job title.

But is that all I am? Is that my identity? Or am I #morethan a developer?

Recently, I am trying to answer differently. I am answering with my "why", as Simon Sinek says.  I help people be at their most effective state.

I am #morethan a developer, I am a leader. I am more than a tech guy, I am a "practical philosopher". I am passionate about law and video games . I am passionate about science and accounting and tax law. I am interested in people and whatever interests them. I am #morethan a developer.

In #SPN, I have seen how so many people are #morethan the job title they hold. People like Mike O'Connor who has become far  #morethan a fighter and Ira Bowman who is #morethan a printer salesman. There are so many who have shown that they are more than just their job or title.

Don't let your job be your box!! What are you #morethan ? Share in the comments or in your own posts using the tag #morethan

PS: If you feel your identity is tied to your work, here is a good song for you - "You are More" by Tenth Avenue North

Great article, Tyler Mann! :) We are definitely #morethan job title. I like #SPN so much for exactly the same reasons. I met so many great people there, working and helping each other in everything... You listed perfect examples of leaders by example, with heart of gold. Both Ira & Mike are just awesome! :) Happy Friday!?

Great article, Tyler Mann! I used to be a physical therapist assistant (still licensed) until God called me to something different as a voiceover artist. I loved helping others as a PTA, and enjoy using my skills and training as a voiceover artist to help tell people's stories and share their messages. Over the last year or so, though, I have come to see how God is using me and my story to encourage others to step out of their comfort zones. I don't know the whole big picture or plan He has for me, but I know I am #morethan a voiceover artist, or PTA, or caregiver. I am a connector, a child of God ready and willing to use my skills and experience to encourage others and hopefully to be a reflection of Him.

Some years ago, a retired head-purchasing agent for GM gave a talk at a local association of purchasing agents. He said, after he retired, he reached out to some of the people he had done business with over the years. Used to having his calls picked up immediately, it came as quite a shock to him that after he had left his position, no one had the time of day for him . . .? "I had thought all those folks were my friends," he said, shaking his head . . .
