More USPTO Trademark Search Tool Tips

Have you tried some of the earlier tips on searching in the new TESS on USPTO??Here are some more tips to try to make this a bit easier:?

?

Boolean/Logical Operators?

When using Logical (i.e., Boolean) Operators, the term must be in ALL CAPS:?

  • AND?
  • OR?
  • AND NOT (Note: the USPTO search system uses AND NOT rather than just NOT)?

Here are some examples:?

  • CM:dyn* AND CM:*mite?will retrieve marks that include terms beginning with dyn and ending with mite?
  • CM:dyn* OR CM:*mite?will retrieve marks that include terms beginning with dyn and terms ending with mite?
  • CM:dyn* AND NOT CM:*mite?will retrieve marks that include terms beginning with dyn but not terms ending with mite?

??

Using Field Tags to Search a Particular Field?

International Classes?

To search in a particular international class or classes, use the field tag IC:?

  • IC:003?will retrieve applications/registrations in International Class 3?
  • IC:(003 OR 005)?will retrieve applications/registrations in either International Class 3 or 5?
  • IC:(003 AND 005)?will retrieve only applications/registrations that include BOTH International Classes 3 and 5?

***Note: Class numbers must be entered as 3 digits.?

??

Coordinated Classes?

The USPTO search system also provides a coordinated class search option (which means classes the USPTO considers to be related), using the field tag CC, e.g.:?

  • CC:005?will retrieve applications/registrations in International Class 005 (pharmaceuticals) as well as the following related international classes:?

????????????001 Chemicals???????

????????????003 Cosmetics and cleaning preparations???????

????????????010 Medical apparatus???????

????????????035 Advertising and business services???????

????????????042 Computer, scientific, and legal services???????????

????????????044 Medical, beauty, and agricultural services?????

*** Note: All coordinated class searches will include:??

????????????U.S. Class A (goods certification marks)?

????????????U.S. Class B (services certification marks)???

????????????U.S. Class 200 (collective membership marks)?

Goods and Services?

To search for particular goods or services, use the field tag GS:?

  • GS:pants will retrieve applications and registrations that include "pants" in their recitation of goods or services – but will not retrieve applications and registrations for clothing other than "pants" or if “pants” appears anywhere else in the application/registration other than in the goods and services recitation?
  • GS:restaurant will retrieve applications and registrations that include "restaurant" in their recitation of goods or services – but will not retrieve applications and registrations for food-related services other than "restaurant" services
  • More than one type of goods/services can be included, e.g., GS:(pants OR shirts OR hats)?

Active/Inactive??

To search for only active or inactive applications and registrations, use the field tag LD:?

  • LD:true will retrieve only active applications and registrations?
  • LD:false will retrieve only abandoned, cancelled, or expired applications and registrations?
