No more than three

We create a lot of pressure for ourselves. I think it mostly comes from unrealistic expectations. We simply believe we can accomplish more in an hour or a day than any human being could.

My master To Do list is horrifying. I’m guessing yours is too. If I focus on it for too long, I feel like I’m the most unproductive slug on the planet. Sure, I need to keep using it so I know there’s one place for all of my must dos — be they short or long term. But it’s not helpful to me on a daily basis.

I learned a very low tech solution several years ago that saves my sanity every day. The 3x3 post it note.

I end each day by writing down the three (no more than that) items I must finish up the next day. They could be a personal phone call, writing an article or teaching a class. It doesn’t matter. But if I get those three things done — I’ve had a good and valuable day.

I try to get two of the three done before noon. What I love about this ridiculously simple mind game is that it’s reasonable and I can usually accomplish the goal. I get to cross off each item with a pen and there’s a visceral thrill to that. The post it note fits on my laptop so it’s always front and center. And…it forces me to truly identify the most important items for the day.

It’s not rocket science but I’m betting if you try it, you’ll be surprised at how much more you get done, how much better you feel about your ability to prioritize and get things done, and how clear it is that the rest can wait a day or two.
