More than a risk management conference. RAW2019, RAW2020 and RAW2021 are still worth rewatching while we wait for #RAW2022

I always hated?risk management ?conferences. And yet, I attended, presented and hosted dozens of?risk management ?conferences all over the world. But something just wasn’t right. And I think I can now pin point what made me very sad at every?risk management ?conference I attended – the?quality ?of learning. Many conferences are “sponsor to talk”, so they are full of empty and feel good sales pitches and wishful thinking, others focus on?risk management ?case studies, but the organisers are usually so disconnected from the risk profession that the?quality ?of case studies is?RM1 ?at best. But my biggest pet peeve is “flavour of the month” type agendas. I will buy you a beer if you can find a conference that doesn’t have cyber, machine learning and AI on its agenda. AI… really… for risk managers that still think multiplying yellow and high is?risk management .

So in 2019 I had enough and created?RISK AWARENESS WEEK. An online platform dedicated to the fundamental science of?risk management . Something that is applicable to risk managers and decision makers alike but more importantly is timeless, regardless of what the next flavour of the month risk will be. I strongly believe that learning how to build an influence diagram or a decision tree and then converting it into a stochastic model, running simulations and back testing model assumptions will prepare you for any emerging risk on the planet.?Risks change, the math under the bonnet is almost always the same.?Learning the basic principles of probability theory, decision science, behavioral economics and corporate finance, in my mind, is still the most important skillset for a risk manager to have.

I have personally used stochastic decision trees to deal with insurance, environmental risks, procurement and investments decisions.?And the techniques I learned at RAW will help me deal with whatever next sexy risk will be promoted tomorrow.
