Be More Than Ok
OK is, “I’m strong enough to carry the groceries in.” OK is, “I’ve accepted that I’m stuck in a job I don’t like.” OK is, “I’m out of shape, but it’s not that bad.”
I want to help people push past just “OK” and to achieve greater.
My fellow Spartans often hear me say that once you reach the top of a mountain, you should go find a higher peak and climb it. I really believe that pushing past our own limits is the only way that we can discover our true greatness.
I’m also a realist. I know that not everyone is an endurance athlete or a mountain climber, but you should have your own personal goals. Think about what they are while I explain the methodology I have found to achieving them.
Before starting Spartan, I had a life-altering experience. In fact, if this incident hadn’t happened, I don’t know if Spartan would even exist. It was one of the hardest trials of my life, but I had to almost lose my leg to become who I am today.
A buddy of mine and I were driving through a blizzard to visit my father who was in the hospital after having a heart attack. We were driving late over tired and before long were both sleeping—and crashed. I was ejected from the passenger seat. My leg was ripped out of my hip and was twisted up behind my body. The pain was unimaginable. Most of the doctors said I wouldn’t run again.
Almost losing my leg woke me up.
It put me in an aggressive state to live—to get back to where I was. I learned that the only way to find the limits of the possible is by going beyond them to the impossible. So, I did my research and practiced yoga and Pilates religiously with a trainer until I regained my strength and was stronger than before.
What are you struggling with? Do your research and figure out how to move past it. Lean in, put yourself out there to become awesome. Only YOU can make you better. If you want change- then you have to push harder then you are pushing today…because what you are doing today is keeping you exactly where you are. If you want more- you need to do more.

7 年Great story! I really enjoy the Spartan races in Austin and hope to do a hurricane heat in Dallas at the Beast this October. I hope to get to meet at one of the races one day.

7 年In August of 2014, at the age of 49, I broke both my arms in a downhill mountain biking accident.?? At the time, I was just 'OK' regarding my fitness level.? The accident woke me up to the vulnerabilty of my body. I didn't want to lament turning 50 - I wanted to feel great.? So, the following December, just four months after the accident, with a bit of trepidation, I commited to run ten Spartan Races (Elite), to be in the best shape of my life during my fiftieth year of living.? I completed the ten races, completed seven more the following year, and will complete six this year.? Although I feel great and have improved my fitness level significantly, each year "ends" with a? different level of 'OK' and a new challenge is established.
