More than just a number
This pandemic took everyone in surprise. A lot of companies had tried to adapt but most companies was left with no other choice but to let go of employees.
Millions of employees found themselves unemployed in this most critical time. And I feel extremely sorry and distressed for all the employees affected.
This time, more than ever, is where the role of HR has become significantly critical in the company. It was a privilege and at the same time a burden to be in the position of processing retrenchment. Why? It’s a privilege to be entrusted the important role of taking care of employee’s separation benefits until their last day of employment but its also a burden to let them go, without a job. Its a painful process to see the best team you have ever worked with go. The team that became your friends. The team you know that gave their best for the company as it was starting up.
Everyone was affected by the pandemic. Millions of employees were let go around the world. But these employees were more than just a number. They are the ones who worked hard and aim to do what's best for the company. They are not just a number. They are the people behind every company’s success and achievements.
It's about time we came to terms with the fact that the company was badly hit by this crisis. As employees were let go, it's true that it also feels that I was also losing a part of myself. No matter what table you're sitting on, you will be affected. It's no longer just about the job, it's the loss of something bigger, the loss of being part of a great team, the late nights' working at the office, the laughter and joy you shared, the late nights' karaoke every other week, the lunchout every once in a while, the travels you were able to push thru, that moments of having a shared goals, the celebrating the shared recognition you achieved, the difficult times you were able to go thru together, all the friendship you built and the realization that how we started from seeing each other almost every waking hours of weekdays to never-seeing one another? Life happens. Tough life. This pandemic is really unexpected.
I only hope that my colleagues we let go were in a much better situation now and that there’s a clearer path for everyone to look forward to in the future. If not, please help me help them as well.
I may not have a lot of time to help them much much earlier. But if any of you, my connections, has any job opening for the following roles, please don’t hesitate to send me a direct message or tag me on your job post, I may have the best candidate you're looking for.
