MORE THAN 600 FERRARIS SOLD ON COLLECTING CARS

While Ferrari may be instantly seen as ‘unobtainable’ to many, there are certain models that are now more affordable than collectors might realise. While the highest Ferrari sale on Collecting Cars is just shy of ￡3 million, at the other end of the scale a Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet in need of some work found a winning bid of ￡21,250 – from none other than Chris Harris.

The star car to date, quite literally, is the ex-Rod Stewart Ferrari F50. Recently sold with a winning bid of ￡2,940,500, it marks the most expensive vehicle ever sold on an online-only auction platform outside the US. Showing 10,998 miles from new, the car was offered fresh from an annual service and clutch replacement, and came with a fantastic history file.

In early October 2023, Collecting Cars also sold a superb example of the F50’s predecessor; the legendary Ferrari F40. The car in question, a 1991 ‘cat/adjust’ specification model with 28,783 km on the odometer, found a winning bid of ￡1,701,000.

Among more than 600 other Ferraris sold are 60+ F355s, 30 variants of the 308, 10 each of the 812 Superfast and 458 Speciale, and three examples of the very rare 575 Superamerica. Particularly notable was the ex-Chris Evans Superamerica listed in September 2023, which had covered less than 16,000 miles from new. Spirited bidding pushed the hammer price to ￡195,500.

Of course, former celebrity owners are not uncommon to find when you are dealing with the Ferrari marque. The ex-Eric Clapton 612 Scaglietti One to One was finished in a unique specification and sold for ￡102,500, while a sensational F12 TDF previously owned by Jay Kay found a winning bid of ￡792,500. In Italy, the team sold a sleek all-black 550 Maranello that counted renowned ‘Ronin’ actor Jean Reno among its previous keepers.

Three examples of Maranello’s latest flagship supercar, the SF90, have found new homes via the platform, including a Stradale in the UK (￡358,500) and a Spider in the EU (€550,000). No fewer than 15 Challenge Stradales have also sold, including the only known 360 Challenge Stradale in Blu Mirabeau (￡195,509). The Collecting Cars team in Australia consigned a striking 488 Pista with a superb specification, which achieved A$805,500, reflecting the considerably higher prices paid for rare exotics ‘Down Under’.

Classic Ferrari models still attract strong bidding at auction, and memorable sales have included a 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ Berlinetta in disassembled but largely restored project form (￡346,000), as well as an outstanding Dino 246 GTS in Blu Sera over Tan with a hammer price of ￡286,500.

Four-seater V12 grand tourers represent one of the lower entry points to Ferrari ownership, with the likes of the 456 GT and 612 Scaglietti available for around the same price as a brand-new prestige family car from BMW or Mercedes-Benz. More than 20 examples of the 456 have sold via the auction platform, and a similar number of 612s – including an exceptionally rare manual gearbox car, believed to be one of only 23 delivered to the UK.

The mid-engined V8 supercars from the modern era remain a popular choice for many bidders, with values for the F355, 360 and F430 all crossing over depending on the variant, specification, mileage and condition. A three-pedal manual F355 Berlinetta in Rosso Corsa over Crema is a specification that will always attract high interest, with sale prices around the ￡75,000 for modest-mileage cars.
