More Than 40...

"My boss arrived at work today in a brand new Ferrari…
I said ‘Wow, that’s an amazing car!’
He said ‘If you work hard, put all your hours in and strive for excellence, I’ll get another one next year.’"
40 hours of Continuous Improvement is going to make your employer very happy. A fantastic skillset that is often used to make the lives of not just managers and supervisors better but also those of our coworkers. We often strive to think of the ways that are going to make the organization successful in the long run and what our part is in it. Improvement after improvement, we slowly move towards the best outcomes over the long run but sometimes just the organization, noble in a way.
The principles and ideas that are used to make a better organization need to be expanded beyond 40 hours a week for the professional. When it comes to career, health, family, community and all those that you care about, the exact same principles that allowed you to create fantastic processes are also going to benefit how you progress through your career, the longevity of your health and how well you can care about those you love. I see the exact same ideas and thoughts that have changed countless business being underutilized as simply a professional skillset.
It always struck me as odd that work is less than 25% of the week and that is what countless people spend money on progressing in, making fantastic results and really sacrificing their time and effort for. Yet with continuous improvement it has direct correlation for life, beyond just 40 hours.
I keep developing my ideas, thoughts and have many open discussions on LinkedIn. I think it’s a fantastic platform for professionals but that may also be its downfall. Sometimes I think LinkedIn might be too strictly professional. When it comes to our personal lives that is something that we might not want to share with a large network, many times with bosses, coworkers and your network, you might not be sharing as much aspirational personal goals. Luckily though, as they say birds of a feather flock together.
What I’ve been working on is a community focused on the Continuous Improvement professionals who want to expand their skillset when it comes to their career and also understand that it is a jumping board for really having the life that they want. When the skillset that provides your income is the same that allows you to have a life of your own design, it’s simply leveraging the same thoughts but in a different context and with more nuance. The one key part of this is going to be surrounding yourself with people who are passionate about doing the same.

There’s truth in the adage that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Which is for better or worse. As this community grows it is going to have the people who are interested in utilizing their skillsets beyond what they are normally meant for. They are going to be collaborative and open to ideas that other people have since this isn’t a common subject. Most of all it beyond just professional, it is a community that is here to benefit all the members in leveraging the skillsets that they have acquired to build a better life for themselves and those they care about.
