MORE THAN 10,000 EMPLOYERS SUPPORTED BY WORKFORCE SINGAPORE IN 2020

In the last Jobs Situation Report (JSR), we shared about the broad spectrum of services that WSG and its partners have extended to jobseekers. As a result, about 55,000 jobseekers were placed last year. Employers play an equally important role for these job placements to take place.

This week’s JSR thus highlights the efforts by WSG to assist the more than 10,000 employers in 2020 that were eager to fill positions, or transform jobs to make them more attractive. This is a significant 45% increase as compared to 2019. The JSR also highlights recruitment strategies that employers have found to be helpful. You can read more here (go.gov.sg/jsr19). I encourage employers that require assistance to approach best-in-class Employment Agencies or Workforce Singapore to fine-tune their recruitment strategies.

To provide more targeted support for hoteliers, WSG together with industry partners also introduced the enhanced Job Redesign and Reskilling Programme for the Hotel Industry. I visited PARKROYAL on Kitchener Road with Margaret Heng, Singapore Hotel Association and Julie Cheong, FDAWU - Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union, to see how they have made effective use of the downtime last year and tapped on the programme to transform and enhance job roles and reskill their workers.

I met several employees who had gone through the programme and are now able to multi-skill across different functions, including 65-year-old Uncle Heng who switched from being a painter to a senior technician, and 72-year-old Aunty Tan whose job role was redesigned when PARKROYAL automated the functions in the uniform room. Heartened by the resilience of the hotel management and staff as well as their willingness to take on the opportunity to reboot and emerge stronger, and encourage others to do so as well. - Jo Teo
