The more successful you are, the more you attract the haters
I had a great laugh this week with an MSP I'm working with. They have a troll!
When they post content from my MSP Marketing Edge this person jumps straight in, commenting with hate and vitriol.
We have no idea why. What an idiot ?? Thankfully the MSP is ignoring them and not engaging with them. They'll soon go away and pick on someone else.
It made me dig out of my archives a piece of direct mail that was once sent back to me. It was 2017 and I was mailing letters to MSPs here in the UK, offering them a free copy of my book on MSP marketing (now out of print, so you'll find copies in charity shops / thrift shops).
One of my letters was returned to me without a stamp, meaning it cost me more money to receive it. The recipient had sent back my letter with "recycle your own rubbish" written on it.
Why would you do that?
If you don't want it, bin it! It's not like we get that much junk mail any more.

What a waste of valuable time and energy to write the message on the letter, type my address onto an envelope, and pop it in the post back to me!
I call people who do stuff like this “haters”. They’re the ones who are so incensed by someone doing something different, that they hit back at it in the most passive aggressive way they can.
When you’re growing your business, you have to ignore these people. The more marketing you do, the more people will notice you. And the more likely it is you will attract criticism.
One of the MSPs I’m working with wrote a book to promote their business and give them a point of differentiation. They use it as a 100 page business card, which is a surprisingly effective tool. At a networking event a few years ago, one of their direct competitors verbally attacked them for doing it.
I think that’s something to celebrate. Because the attack was most likely driven by fear.
You simply cannot allow yourself the headspace to listen to the critics and the haters. You must stay focused on the reason you are doing more marketing – to get more new clients, grow your business, and give yourself the best possible life.

2 年Love this Paul - "I think that’s something to celebrate.?Because the attack was most likely driven by fear." I recently had a sad little troll coming for me, even going so far as to tell me "you're young and you're ruining your potential future." Compliments to my skincare routine aside ??♀? it was clear he was projecting his insecurities on me... though it's troubling how easily he felt he could "put me in my place."

2 年Trolls are everywhere, no message will resonate with everyone. The fix for this is to "Know Your Audience". Sometimes I get off a sales call and I talk to the team, usually, we say "They arent one of ours" Or "They don't get it". That is fine, we put them in the lost deal column and never follow up. We are not trying to be all things to all people so there will be some angry people who want to vent for the sake of venting. There is freedom in this.

2 年Yes, it comes from fear and jealously. Why can they get round to doing this and I can't. There only option is a feeble lash out.
