More space, less stuff

More space, less stuff

Start the year off right and set an intention to create a workspace that is comfortable, productive and inspiring.

I know there are many people who believe that they are able to work effectively in cluttered work spaces . . . "I know where everything is!" . . . The research would tend to disagree with them.

Studies have found that workers who had a clean and tidy desk reported higher levels of well-being and lower levels of stress than those who had cluttered and disorganised workspaces. The research also found that tidy workers were more likely to be motivated and productive.

We are also less distracted and make better decisions when we have space.

Finally, seems we are more engaged in our work and are less likely to experience burnout.

So, the jury is in. Tidiness is next to productivity! Here are some things you could do if you are currently in a less than tidy situation:

  1. Start by removing any crap from your workspace, such as old papers, empty coffee cups, or items that are not contributing to your work.
  2. Organise your remaining stuff into categories, such as work-related, office supplies, and personal items.
  3. Use storage solutions, such as filing cabinets, desk organisers (I was gifted this one last year and I LOVE IT - Thank you Kara Atkinson), and shelving, to keep items in their designated categories.
  4. Keep your desktop clear of any unnecessary clutter, such as post-it notes, to reduce distractions and make it easier to focus.
  5. Have a clean desk policy. At the end of each day, tidy up, take away teacups, plates etc and leave your desk in a way that your tomorrow self will enjoy.

Lastly, make sure to take regular breaks to stand up and move around, stretch, and give your eyes a break from the screen.
