We know that professional translators can only use software to support their work, not as the primary source for translations. We’ve also stated that computer applications can never completely replace a human translator’s work. In this article, we will elaborate more on our opinion! Here are some of the main reasons why machines can’t replace human translators:
Cultural sensitivity is one of the most crucial aspects of translating written content. Every culture is represented with their language. When a text is translated from one language to another, translators must take the cultural background into account. Human translators can understand cultural values and norms; thus, they will translate correctly and in context. On the other hand, machines will probably miss the cultural touch that only humans can add.?
As translators, we must learn whole vocabularies, new words and expressions, slang and idioms and trends. For machines, it takes time to add new words to the database. Local translators know that some words are becoming widely used before being officially recognized as words or having specific meanings.? The pandemic is an excellent example of an event which triggered a whole new view on words.? Established words increased in use such as self-isolating whilst a new vocabulary became part of our lives such as WFH and covidiot. ? Gender neutrality is also becoming an important component of language.??
A very important part of understanding the whole idea a person is trying to communicate is to understand the context of the conversation. Machines don't consider context, so that it can change the meaning of a conversation. Human translators understand the culture of the language, the nuances, phrases, and in particular the tone of voice used by the speaker. Machines don't understand context, they can't translate perfectly.
These are the things that prove that professional human translators cannot be replaced by machines. All of those reasons should be considered if you have very important documents to be translated. You need to work with professional translators to get the most accurate translation for your projects!
