MORE REASONS TO MEDITATE
In a recent meditation class, the teacher reminded us about the many positive psychology tenets and activities that ultimately help with success and a happy life. Even though I had heard these before, somehow these tenets just dropped off my radar screen for a bit.
Here are a couple of items I relearned and are actionable activities for leaders:
Meditation
Meditation is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
Along the way, I forgot to breathe! Many times we just don’t have the time to meditate for twenty minutes a day, but a mini-meditation works just as well. Taking a deep breath each time you count down from 10 to 1 works. I highly recommend this mini-meditation. When you have a tense meeting or presentation, try it. You will think more clearly and be less emotional.
Live in the Moment
By living in the moment we forget about worry. Try to live for a day in the moment. How did that feel and what did that look like for you? This is hard to do on a consistent basis, especially for me. Focus on your child’s homework for an hour and not all of the texts and emails coming in on your iPhone.
Multitasking
Stop multitasking. It seems more productive, but multitasking is toxic for your brain. Just stop. There is plenty of research that supports this theory. Stop for a second and feel the warm sun on your face. Yesterday, I had one of those amazing days that I wish that I had savored just a bit more.
Appreciation
Take a step back and have an appreciation for all that is going well. Take a minute to think about what is new and good that has happened to you, and write it down. Appreciate and think of the joyful things that are going on right now. What went well this week?
Here’s some reading to supplement. Pick one bucket and try executing for one week.
