More practical tips for accountants in practice

Thanks for subscribing to this Linkedin newsletter which contains extracts from my weekly email newsletter for accountants in practice.

I really appreciate all of your support and feedback. Please comment below with your favourite takeaway from this edition, and if you can, please share this to your newsfeed (link at the end) or send it to an accountant you know who would value its contents.

This week Cadbury's reduced the size of family-size Dairy Milk bars by 10% - and kept the price the same. This, plus feedback suggesting my weekly emails, posts and articles here are too long has prompted me to publish this shorter version today. And to keep the price the same ;-)

Let me know if you miss the longer version.

3 practical tips shared recently in 1-2-1 sessions

If any of these resonate maybe now would be the time for us to have a conversation to see if I could help you too:

  1. Build a list of your real advisory services:?You've said you aren't sure you know what topics you could advise on. Don't just copy the generic and often theoretical?lists on other accountants' websites. Make a list of the topics you know you already advise on. Then, at the end of each day, add further topics on which you have given clients advice that day. We can discuss your list next time and build your confidence to promote and deliver such advice more often for a decent fee.
  2. Don't dwell on problems, dwell on solutions:?I understand why you are worried and I'm pleased you are happy for us to focus on possible solutions. Ask yourself: What are my options? What am I in control of? What can I do? What resources do I have I can use? What do I need to let go of (in other words stop worrying about)? Who can I turn to for help? Who can I collaborate with?
  3. Pause before making key decisions:?There are times when it's fine to make quick decisions and choices. But when these will have long-term implications you need to pause and consider all relevant factors before making key decisions. (You also wouldn't be the first to use me as a sounding-board to sense check any such decisions).

Tip re Linkedin voice messages

When you send a direct message to someone on Linkedin, consider leaving a voice message instead of a typed one. Just click on the microphone icon next to the message box.
