“No More Parties until Morale Improves!”

“No More Parties until Morale Improves!”

I have heard many Principals over the years complaining and worrying about some team members. They seemed removed from the rest of the team and didn’t get involved in any of the morale and culture building exercises and programs that were being organised by the management team or the social committee. They can’t understand why a team member would rather stay home at night than attend a team building, all expenses paid, ten pin bowling competition against other agencies in the Franchise. Now, there is a perfectly good explanation for this, and it will be of no surprise to probably half of the readers who are reading this or to those who have been psychometrically profiled.

We know through our profiling data that approximately 40% of any real estate team will be more introverted than extroverted. The more introverted profile types are Mechanics, Lords and Accumulators, those that have higher levels of ‘Steel’ energy. They are very process and systems focussed unlike their ‘Blaze’ energy counterparts who sit on the opposite side of the Agent Dynamics square who are all about relationships, connections and people. We also know that a large majority of ‘High Steel’ energy team members are working in administration or property management positions which are the most suitable roles for them. When balancing the books, it is far better to have them done by someone with a high attention to detail who naturally is very systematic rather than someone who loves to chat and can be easily distracted.

So where is all this going you ask? Well, pay attention you folk who are ‘High Blaze’ energy profile types and I will tell you. By ‘High Blaze’ I am talking about Stars, Supporters and Deal Maker profiles who, because of their natural ability to network and promote, are more commonly found in Sales roles. If the Business Owner is ‘High Blaze’ energy they will often put emphasis on team participation and motivation as a benchmark of a great team culture.

Every business owner in the land wants to have a team culture that helps drive their business forward, but it is important to realise that not all team members will share the same definition of team culture. ‘High Blaze’ energy folk will see it as everybody interacting like a big happy family each day with lots of interaction and ‘High Steel’ may well define it as a team working each day to successfully complete their tasks to achieve the common goal. Neither is more correct than the other.

Team members who are more introverted tend to have a smaller social network and would rather spend time with people who they know and are more in tune with them than meet new people and spend time establishing rapport and connection.

The message here is to understand that every person in the team has the right to be their own profile type and be comfortable in their own skin. Trying to turn an introvert into an extrovert is an exercise in disappointment. We could discuss for hours what defines a good team member and at the end still agree to disagree. If you have booked a table for the entire team to attend an awards night and some team members would prefer not to attend, it is not the end of the world. Don’t jump to the conclusion that they are not happy or not part of the team. Respect their honesty and appreciate that to have an orchestra that is in tune, we need members that play totally different instruments and play them well. That is what makes the music!
