No more M.Phil: UGC's bold move

The UGC has discontinued the M.Phil degree, advising students against seeking admission due to its non-recognition. In an official notice on December 26, the UGC referred to Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. degree) Regulations 2022, explicitly prohibiting Higher Educational Institutions from offering M.Phil programs. The notice, available on ugc.gov.in, urges universities to cease admissions promptly for the academic year 2023-24 in accordance with the new regulations published on November 7, 2022.


Mapping educational growth: Insights into the surge of private universities in India

Over the past five years, the nation has witnessed the establishment of 140 private universities, with Gujarat assuming precedence, succeeded by Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, as per Ministry of Education data. In this period, Gujarat welcomed 28 new private universities, Maharashtra saw 15, Madhya Pradesh had 14, and Karnataka had 10. During the 2018-19 academic session, 40 private universities were established, with a total of 34 in the last quinquennium.


AICTE warns students against fake 10-day MBA crash course

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) issued a warning against a fraudulent trend offering 10-day MBA crash courses, clarifying its non-endorsement of such programs. Emphasising the two-year duration of a legitimate MBA as a postgraduate degree, AICTE cautioned against motivational speakers and influencers misleading students. The notice underscores the Supreme Court's mandate, prohibiting institutions from providing technical courses, including MBAs, without AICTE clearance.


IIT-M, Sevalaya to sign pact in education and healthcare

IIT Madras and Sevalaya, a charitable organisation in Tamil Nadu, plan to sign two MoUs in education and healthcare, with a focus on leveraging Artificial Intelligence for healthcare projects. The collaboration aims to extend healthcare access to all Indian villages through Sevalaya's mobile healthcare units. IIT-M’s Director, V Kamakoti further emphasised on the growing demand for jobs in the sustainability sector, underscoring the immediate importance of educating young children about sustainability.

IIT Guwahati partners with Assam Govt's Arohan Scheme to promote STEM education, aligning with the National Education Policy 2020. Hosting 3,311 students, the initiative, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, operates as a Mentor-Mentee program for secondary class students in Government schools. The program includes mentoring, exposure trips, competitions, and interactions for the career progression of government school students, with 65% female participation. IIT Guwahati's interactive sessions aim to ignite scientific and technological enthusiasm, contributing to the holistic development of students from 29 districts in Assam, in line with the institute's commitment to STEM education promotion.
