MORE!
Michael Burcham
Trusted executive coach, advisor and thought leader on strategy, entrepreneurship and value creation.
I was born in America, raised here in the deep South. I've lived my entire life in America. I'm very grateful for that. Freedom, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, the right to be me, the chance to pursue my dream - all this is great.
But America isn't just a Nation; it's also a System. A system shaped by capitalism and democracy, corporations and lobbyists, extreme wealth and total poverty, bias, bigotry and convictions. A system built on the buying and selling of goods, services, and sometimes people.
And a particular spirit that from the birth of America has been whispering in her ear... MORE!
MORE land, MORE expansion, MORE growth, MORE stuff!
MORE wealth, MORE control, MORE influence, MORE power!
MORE customers, MORE square footage, MORE product for less money, MORE up and to the right!
When in doubt, MORE! Because MORE is better.
But more is not always better. MORE is not always good. Sometimes MORE is bad. MORE can be Destructive. And sometimes MORE is simply evil.

7 年Michael Totally disagree. More is hope. More is a potential job. More is motivation. Most Americans are immigrants They had much LESS. More is the reason they came to America. You portray more as evil, sinful, and greedy and occasionally it is, but it also provides the dream that is America. Agree with Brad Richards.

7 年More money for cronies - definitely a bad idea.

7 年Awesome stuff! "More" is why corporations are increasingly inefficient, employees are more likely to lack loyalty and our environment is being depleted faster. Unethical decision-making and a singular focus on capital gains and scaling is dangerous and has a butterfly effect.

7 年Michael Burcham, I can think of only one thing we need more: Jobs. :) For all the other "stuff," is "more" the result of constant advertising? No TV in this house, going on 20 years, and its possible that I'm immune to the secret sales pitch. Back to getting by...without more.

7 年The desire for more is a human not just American trait. The human nature of desiring more, better, further is at the root of human ambition thus exploration, innovation, technology, and overall human prosperity. Like all human traits it is a double edged sword and can be harmful in things like greed, gluttony, and materialism. To work to pin America because of this human trait is intellectually dishonest. Frankly, to write such a piece demonstrates a lack of knowledge and/or understanding of the human condition.
