The more irreplaceable team members, The more you are winning on execution.

Let me start with a statement: You are replaceable if what you do is replicable!

There is a distinct difference of replicating what you do vs. replicating how you do. Replicating ‘How you do’ is difficult, the most difficult it is, the less chances that you will be easily replaceable. Ok hoping I am not establishing a theory here. This thought came while running a startup, I find many people walk-in, work over the years and suddenly find that they are replaceable, it confuses them, irritates them, makes them feel that company is not understanding their value. However this is natural /bound to happen if you have stopped adding values to what you do and also bringing your own differentiation to it.

Let’s take an example, during the initial development of your organisation, a set of sales process, performance process gets established, each sales /BD manager gets it going as per the defined protocol. Over the time, only certain sales team members think different way, add/suggest a different process/course correct and while 20% others simply follow what has been written/established on day one. Now these 20% claim they didn’t have time, they thought ‘doing as per rule’ is the way to go forward. However irony is whatever this 20% sales team members did, all their knowledge is captured, sales funnel has been established and there is no differentiation in their thought/action, hence they are replicable & replaceable. They are not going to go to next stage of organization development.

The above example of sales function is equally right for engineering, finance, marketing and even management.

Only those key people who 
kept on modifying their approach, 
questioned ‘why we do the way we do’, 
debated about different ways, added new models, and 
demonstrated that they have a magic in how they do things.

These are the ones who drive your organization to super success. These are the irreplaceable type, next set of leaders will emerge from these.

The more of these ‘irreplaceable’ in your team, you are winning on execution.

Santosh, What a timely article! Right now, I'm trying to mentor and coach one of my team members. I like him so much...but.... This is what I did...I shared your article...hopefully...this will help It is not easy for us as leaders to coach and mentor people...we are also equally interested and biased to take team members to next level and would love to see their success, their happiness...and they joy. Only that way...we get gratified as leaders. Thanks for the timely article.
