More Insights on Counteracting Imposter Syndrome

When you change your attitude, you change your altitude! Geoff Thompson

One thing that greatly increases the impact of ‘Imposter Syndrome’ is deprecating self-talk. We would never talk to others the way we talk to ourselves!

Our brains are ‘wired’ for negative bias. Become aware of this and instead of focussing on the diminishing thoughts - like the one person who wasn’t engaged with your presentation or the one piece of less than excellent feedback received, consciously focus on the things you do well.

Remember we can never please all of the people all of the time and some people just won’t resonate with you and that’s OK!

Change your response to ‘failure’ -

Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.”

Henry Ford

Instead of beating yourself up for every mistake or missed deadline, recognise that you are only human and focus on the learning and growth that you can take from the experience and move on. We learn so much more from our challenges and ‘failures’ than we ever do from our successes.

Working with a coach/mentor and talking through your insecurities and fears, will help you to start recognising and re-igniting some long-forgotten strengths and skills.

Remember, you are only scratching the surface of your true potential. Beyond wherever you are now, lies an infinite well of potential that would absolutely astound you.

In the Significance Surgery last week we were talking about the magic of living and working in ‘flow’ rather than being the proverbial ‘jack of all trades’ we were brought up to be.

When you are in Flow, playing to your God-given strengths, doing the work you love, you consistently deliver excellence. The work comes easily and naturally, it uplifts you, fires up your innovative thinking and your self-esteem grows. You exude that irresistible energy of someone who is living life on purpose and you effortlessly attract people to you who just want to be in your space.

When you are in Flow, you Glow and when you Glow, you Grow!

Some top tips for building your confidence and self-esteem

1.   Recognise and celebrate who you are at your core. Start by taking a psychometric test. The biggest shift I had in this was doing a personality profile in 2012 – it had a major impact on my self-belief, my vision and my actions that have led me to the life and business I absolutely love today.

2. Become an ‘expert’ in your field. When you know your true value, and your unique offerings, focus on constantly learning and growing in your specialist area so you always have something fresh to offer your clients and prospects.

You will be excited to share your knowledge and your clients will feel enriched by your offerings.

3. Be the best version of you. Regularly invest in your own physical, spiritual and mental growth. Regularly stretch yourself out of your comfort zone - keep pushing the boundaries.

Surprise yourself everyday by stepping up in both your business and personal life and enjoy the wonderful feelings of achievement and fulfilment at the end of each day.

Join me in The Significance Surgery on Thursday at 12md when we will be sharing insights and top tips on how to strengthen your personal brand and presence and build more confidence every day.

Imposter syndrome is not a problem with the way women see themselves or not believing in themselves as having the skills to be a leader. Implicit bias is causing the syndrome in women, because women are not taken seriously as leaders. Treat the cause of the syndrome and it will go away.
