More important than a sporting win

More important than a sporting win

I'm Portuguese, living with my family in Spain for more than 14 years, and because values don't need to have nationalities, I share this history, that we all need to be proud of:

This Kenyan athlete, Abel Mutai, was a few metres from the finish line, but he got confused by the signs and stopped thinking that he had finished the race. The athlete running behind him, the Spaniard Ivan Fernandez, realising what was happening, started shouting at him to keep running. Mutai does not know Spanish, so he did not understand him.

Fernandez, recognising that Muray did not understand him, pushed him to keep running and win the race.

A journalist asked Ivan, "Why did you do it?" Ivan replied, "My dream is that one day we will live in a world where we help each other reach the finish line."

The journalist insisted, "But why did you let the Kenyan athlete win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win the race. This victory was his.

The journalist persisted, and asked again, "But you could have won." Ivan looked at him and replied, "But what would have been the merit of my victory? What would have been the honour of that medal? What would my mother have thought of that?"

What values do we teach our children and how much do we inspire others to live virtuous lives? Most of us just take advantage of others' weaknesses and shortcomings instead of pushing them to achieve their goals.

Those are the value we need to stand, how to win also is important.
