The more I practice…the luckier I get.

The more I practice…the luckier I get.

I love that quote. I’m not a golfer…I don’t even particularly like watching golf…but the eponymous Gary Player quote is one of my favourite business quotes of all time.

The more I practice, the luckier I get.

But why should we all learn from this? Well it strikes me that often people simply don’t do what they need to do, and nowhere more so than in social media. They know they need to be active on social, but they’re not. The say “well I could do that” as if it were easy…but they still don’t do it. They seem to think that somehow doing simple things often is either beneath them or not going to deliver the results they want (or need).

But the truth is being successful on social media. Regularly publishing things. Engaging your audience. Saying please and thank you. Writing good (short) articles that demonstrate to onlookers that are actually do know what you’re talking about rather than just talking about how good you are.

All of these things that are common sense yet still so few seem to do.

So why am I saying this (again)?

Well, it’s a new year and could be time for a new start.

Make yourself a schedule for what you’re going to do.

  • re-write your profile
  • grow your network
  • interact with more people
  • publish more content

It may take you a few hours to re-work your profile but after that, 30 minutes every day (note the use of the word “every”) will make a dramatic difference.

So go ahead, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

And if you’re thinking “this doesn’t mean me because I’m too busy” then think again. Because what you are in fact saying with that statement is “I’m too busy to create a profile and be active on a network containing 590 million people from around the world”…and even you must admit that your argument doesn’t really hold water.

Go on…you know you should.

well: thank you :-) "30 min per day" can mean a very long response time for a global audience, so for b2c that doesn't quite fit. and obviously this depends on the size of your audience, too. but that's probably me nitpicking ;-)

Great message Adam?thank you. Daily practice is critical, and what you have outlined is also critical to understand - it needs to be the right practice, with the right technique. I remember a golf pro speaking many years ago about the amount of hours they practice and that once they get the fundamental techniques right, practice makes permanent (i.e.good habits are formed). If we continue to practice bad technique, then not so good habits are formed.

Strange that some people think they don't have to do anything to get luckier. If people spent more effort on their LinkedIn profiles and being 'active' - they could reap the rewards. Maybe it's just easier for them to say they are too busy..... #socialmedia?#saleseminence?#modernselling?
