It's time to eat like a pro

By Angie Asche

There's more to peak performance than protein and carbs. As a sports dietitian, this extra edge is what I help elite athletes find every day. Now it's your turn.

First up, it's important to learn your body's signals. Are you flagging at the gym or failing to see improvements?

Signs your nutrition needs some work can include:

  • low energy levels
  • poor recovery from training
  • unwanted weight loss
  • increased irritability
  • constantly thinking about food
  • extreme hunger at night
  • poor sleep
  • for women, loss of menstrual cycle

From creatine to my favorite f-word (fiber!), I'll run you through the nutrients and tips even the athletes can overlook. Let's unlock your best performance.

Struggling with your diet? The answer is between the sheets

Not-so-fun fact: poor sleep messes with the neurotransmitters that tell your brain when to eat and plays havoc with hunger hormones, sending you into snacking overdrive. So, if you're trying to eat better, you need to sleep well.

Fasting for the New Year? I have thoughts

By Angie Asche

Is it strange that, as a dietitian, the thing most people want to ask me about is NOT eating? Intermittent fasting is a hot topic and I know you have a lot of questions. So let's start with the big one…

Is intermittent fasting a good way to lose weight?

Research shows that fasting is no more effective than a calorie deficit (consuming less than you burn) for weight loss. But if you find a traditional calorie deficit difficult to stick to, intermittent fasting could be useful for achieving your goal.

Let's say you've got a sweet tooth that regularly kicks in around 8pm. Fasting in the evening might make it easier for you to avoid a snack attack by placing all food off limits at that time of day. But remember, intermittent fasting isn't a silver bullet. For some people, it just makes it easier to eat less overall without thinking about it.
