The new NHS Pharmacy First otitis media, NHS Pharmacy First sinusits and NHS Pharmacy First sore throat e-learning programmes consist of short videos and quizzes. In the videos, GP Dr Phil Xiu takes us through the rationale behind Pharmacy First PGDs as well as giving us practical hints and tips for practice.
Whether this is a new area for you or you are an IP with a scope including urgent care, you will learn something new that will support you in practice. Phil has a down to earth style and explains technicial language. I listened to the sinusitis e-learning videos at the end of a long community pharmacy day and could keep up and retain information.
The sinusitis e-learning was split into two videos and a quiz. The first video was on the background and rationale for PGDs and guidelines including practical hints and tips. The second video was on the clinical pathways. Go straight to the sections that you need. I skipped the clinical pathways elements as I had already received training on this and I am looking forward to completeing the sore throat and otitis media e-learning this week.
There is also an NHS Pharmacy first otitis media otoscopy video. In this video Dr Phil Xiu takes us through different technique options for otoscopy. This may be beneficial to watch prior to undertaking otoscopy training, or as a refresher. Even if you do otoscopy regularly in practice it's easy to get into bad habits. Phil included some different technique options that were worth considering and lots of practical hints and tips.

There is also a link on this page to our new Dermatology e-learning and this programme contains learning in bite-sized chunks. Pharmacy First conditions included are infected insect bites, impetigo and shingles and there is also learning on other skin conditions. Go straight to the section(s) that you need. You do not need to complete every section and you might choose to go back and complete some sections later.
One of the things that I think about a lot when I provide GPCPCS and undertake urgent care prescribing is missing something significant like sepsis. The NHS Pharmacy First Essential skills e-course, which you can access via the NHS Pharmacy First page on the CPPE website, has learning on sepsis as well as other aspects of offering this service. In my community pharmacy we have decided to undertake NEWS2 observations or equivalents for every patient that we refer with infection. The sepsis trust link on the CPPE sepsis learning gateway has resources to support you when NEWS2 scoring is not practial or not appropriate, for example when working with a child, someone who is pregnant or during remote consultations.
I hope that these resources support you to feel confident to offer the new NHS Pharmacy First Service. All the best with your learning.
This sounds incredibly helpful for busy pharmacy teams! Thanks for sharing this valuable resource to enhance patient care.
