The smart home market supports an incredible number of product types from a wide variety of brands, which results in an incredibly fragmented user experience and one without interoperability between products. Various standards efforts have yet to be able to solve the issue.
Most recently, major industry stakeholders, including the tech giants, have joined the Connectivity Standards Alliance (formerly the Zigbee Alliance) to develop and support a new communication protocol, Matter (formerly CHiP). Matter is the unified IP-based connectivity protocol built on proven technologies, helping connect and build reliable, secure IoT ecosystems. Matter-enabled products are expected to be released in 2022.?
Parks Associates?informed respondents that a group of companies has come together to ensure their smart home products will work together, and products from this group will carry a mark. The research firm reports that more than half say a mark would be a very important purchase consideration for smart home devices.
