re: your Oct 26, 2024 Newsletter…. “Is Seattle likely to be followed by other PDs”?
David did a good job of defending his big PR client, SIAC. But not defending the big issue of RMR market value. He displayed one of the self-serving reasons Alarm Associations have lost much credibility by Law Enforcement. Distribution of much inaccurate data, beginning with Salt Lake City. SLC discovered VR in support of resources for the Winter Olympics… so productive, thereafter remained strict VR, now time tested and court tested.
Also David failed to mention the several Seattle neighbors, Burien, Bellingham, Kent, Yakima, that have been VR for many years. Yes, in other parts of the country several cities started VR and dropped it... because so successful, it lost the city millions of false alarm revenue. (His other errors for another time). LE/Law Enforcement now make the rules, not SIAC. An alternate to VR (not a substitute), is now court tested… and about ready. Nicknamed “Lawful Perpetrator”. Return to “normal”, except the lawful perpetrator is now the monitoring source that calls for help….loss of immunity and now responsible for all false alarm fines/fees. Unnecessary police response will stop. Alarm Associations need to be repurposed.

I do think verification of alarms is a good idea in most situations, though certainly not in emergency – and my own home alarm will be dispatched before a verification call is made to me.
However, I am not a fan of alarm companies being fined and I am not a fan of police shifting their public service duties to the private sector [alarm industry in this instance] by imposing “or else” requirements of “no response” “unless ,,,”. Police responsibility is non-delegable in my opinion, so the alarm industry only helps law enforcement as best it can and technology permits.
As far as alarm associations, join your local and consider national too. The people in these organizations work hard for the industry and they are really your only “game in town” watching out for the business you are in.
