GhatGPT's guide to Teaching with AI?

OpenAI has released a "Teaching with AI guide"to help educators integrate ChatGPT into classrooms. I believe it's a must read for all educators.

As well as prompt examples, it offers practical suggestions like generating lesson plans and advice on differentiation.

The guide also comes with a very helpful Educator FAQ. Questions include;

However, it also highlights the limitations of AI in educational settings. It acknowledges the flaws in plagiarism detection tools, which have been criticised for their inaccuracy and bias against non-native English speakers.

Recently OpenAI itself had to withdraw its own AI-based plagiarism detector due to low accuracy.

OpenAI notes; "While some (including OpenAI) have released tools that purport to detect AI-generated content, none of these have proven to reliably distinguish between AI-generated and human-generated content."

On assessent it states "It is inadvisable and against our Usage Policies to rely on models for assessment decision purposes without a 'human in the loop'.

Educators are advised to remain actively involved in the assessment process, using AI as a supplementary tool rather than allowing it to make critical decisions autonomously.

Let's now see what this looks like.

Have you ever got feedback block?

Ever had one of those days? Those 27 essays won't correct themselves. Help is on the way!

We've all heard of "writer's block".

"Feedback Block" is the mental roadblock teachers may experience when they're fatigued or uninspired, leading to repetitive or even unhelpful feedback. During these times, teachers might find it challenging to provide insightful, personalised comments, which can be both frustrating and time-consuming. I hate it when it happens.

Having a pre-compiled comments can be a highly effective tool for educators, particularly when giving feedback on long essays or other assignments.

What I demonstrate here can be a real time-saver, allowing you to provide immediate and consistent feedback. It can be especially useful during busy assessment periods or when you're juggling multiple responsibilities.

Here's an example:

  8. Lacking Structure Your article has some good information but lacks a coherent structure. Consider revising to improve flow.
  9. Inconsistent Tone Your tone fluctuates throughout the article, making it hard to follow. Aim for a more consistent style.
  10. Factual Errors Your article contains some inaccuracies. Make sure to double-check your facts before submitting.
  11. Vague Language Your use of language is too vague and doesn't convey a clear understanding of the Irish weather. Be more specific.
  12. Repetitive Your article is repetitive and doesn't offer new insights after the first few paragraphs. Consider revising.
  13. Lacking Focus Your article seems to lack a clear focus. Decide on a specific angle about the Irish weather and stick to it.
  14. Needs Substantial Revision Your article is disjointed and contains multiple errors. It needs a substantial revision to meet the assignment's requirements.
  15. Unsatisfactory Unfortunately, your article doesn't meet the basic criteria for this assignment. Consider revisiting the guidelines and starting afresh.

Please note!

However, it's important to note that while a comment bank can streamline the feedback process, the comments should and MUST be personalised to fit the individual performance and needs of each individual student.

Of course, variations of this prompt can be used across both primary and post-primary levels, as well as in different subjects, making it a versatile tool for report writing.
