More of this in 2023: things recruiters and jobseekers should add to their wish list

This week's article will be short and sweet. At the beginning of the year I took some time to reflect on what we do for a living, why we do it, and what we can accomplish as recruiters and job seekers.?

There are three main reasons why I fell into recruitment 5 years ago. First - I couldn’t afford to complete my law degree after my Bachelor Arts Degree. Second, my mentor?was a full-desk recruiter for an executive search firm - I figured if he could do it, so could I. Third, I’ve always valued people and getting a job that put that at the forefront was always my dream.?

So - this brings me to my 2023 wish list for us as recruiters and jobseekers:

Upskilling

  • I wish more people understood that there is no down side to upskilling. In fact you become more valuable on the job market. Whether that means a pay increase?or promotion at your current company, or at another, you increase your skillset & expertise in order to contribute more to the job market.

Networking

  • I wish people networked more. It can be very daunting at first, reaching out to strangers on the internet or at an in-person event. But once you do it a few times, it becomes second nature and the benefits are invaluable.?
  • You don’t have to be outgoing to network. I know a number of introverts and their whole careers are dedicated to networking. Anyone can do it.?

Mentorship

  • I wish people would take this role more seriously. I like to think of it as that phrase ‘paying it forward’. I had a great mentor, and I was lucky enough to learn some valuable lessons some which are still relevant today. Even if I hadn’t, I love the feeling of helping others grow professionally there’s so much we can do to help others grow. The impact you can have on someone’s life may not mean much to you but will to them.?

As we all make plans for 2023 I’m sure our careers are front of mind. Like I did at the beginning of the year I encourage you to pause and reflect on what matters to you as a recruiter or jobseeker and if you already have, best wishes for the year ahead.
