Moonlighting, What is your take on it?
The term “Moonlighting” has gathered a lot of attention these days and HRs in the organization are more than careful about this practice.
But What is “Moonlighting”?
Employee moonlighting is when an employee works more than one job. The moonlighting employee often works one full-time job and one part-time job, while some people use the phrase to apply to any circumstance in which a person works for more than one organization.?
This could be in the form of taking up another full-time job with another organization or taking up freelancing projects or Par-time jobs.
This became a buzz in India since major IT firms, including Infosys and Wipro, have advised their staff against the practice. An email with the subject line 'No Twin Timing/No Moonlighting,?Infosys' HR department said that moonlighting is prohibited under the employees' code of conduct and any violation might result in disciplinary action, including termination of employment. This tech giant also highlighted a section of the offer letter in which the company indicated that workers are not permitted to work for other companies without the authorization of Infosys.
The former head of Infosys, Mohandas Pai, said that the rise in moonlighting was due to low starting salaries. "If the employees don’t?get paid well, they would want to make?more money, and moonlighting?an easy option to do that because technology is easily?available.'" in Dollars.
The ethics of moonlighting has become a point of contention. Rishad Premji, chairman of Wipro, called the practice "cheating," but CP Gurnami, CEO of Tech Mahindra, said that people need to change with the times. “I welcome disruption in the ways we work”
