Moonlighting means taking up a second job or multiple other work assignments apart from one’s full-time job.
There are multiple reasons why an Individual can be pursuing this.
·?????Creates opportunity for an easier career switch
·?????Makes way for multiple sources of income
·?????Can give the satisfaction of pursuing passion
·?????Could be a good way of exploring another field
Why some companies are worried about moonlighting?
·?????It may lead to loss of trade secrets and confidentiality when working for competitors
·?????Loss of productivity in office hours and lesser focus on their company’s work.
·?????Chances of the employee leaving the organization are increased.
·?????Technology and resources offered by the company could be used for other’s benefit prior to theirs.
But, what are the arguments?
-Some companies clearly have rules that forbade a second job or a side work and, in such cases, it becomes a conflict of interest and clear violation of the contract with your primary company and they are free to fire you.
-The endeavors undertaken by an employee outside office hours are not and should not be interfered by the company.
So, what is the way forward?
·?????Moonlighting in areas that are not at a conflict of interest with the primary company.
·???????Companies releasing gig-friendly policies and programs to support the employees.
·???????Ensuring that the individual does not violate the company’s policies and it’s up to them to maintain the ethicality of this practice.
·???????Filling in the shortage of skilled workers by undertaking training programs in educational institutions.
