Monumental Mistake? Movies Where Statues, Temples & Other Memorials (Some Destroyed) Feature

"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;

Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

EXCERPT FROM 'OZYMANDIAS' BY PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY

With the events in the US and UK surrounding the agitation for removal of monuments and statues to some dubious figures from the past, a look at movies where vainglorious and other works of art feature heavily...

SAMSON (2018) - he'll bring the house (or temple) down...

RAPA NUI (1994) - the Moai statues and the reason for the abandonment of Easter Island

AGORA (2009) - Christians destroy the pagan temples in Late Roman Alexandria

LAND OF THE PHARAOHS (1955) - Pharaoh Jack Hawkins builds himself a magnificent tomb; his naughty Cypriot wife Joan Collins is bricked up in it.

THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES (1961) Sergio Leone (the Dollars trilogy) directs this Sword 'n Sandals epic

Two movies where the protection of precious statues and works of art is the theme; THE TRAIN (1964) and THE MONUMENTS MEN (2014)

And two with a sentimental centre: GREYFRIARS BOBBY (2005) and Oscar Wilde's THE HAPPY PRINCE (1974)

An iconic national treasure/symbol is pilfered: STONE OF DESTINY (2006) and THE JOKERS (1967):

Of course, if it's the wanton destruction of internationally known landmarks you're interested in, there's more than enough disaster movies to sate your appetite - CLOVERFIELD, ARMAGEDDON, MARS ATTACKS!, THE CORE, 2012, INDEPENDENCE DAY, TEAM AMERICA, DEEP IMPACT, V FOR VENDETTA, GI JOE I II, LONDON HAS FALLEN, SAN ANDREAS, REIGN OF FIRETHE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, GEOSTORM ad infinitum...
